Essential Oil Recipes

There’s a wealth of information out there about the benefits of essential oils. If you’re hoping to whip up some fabulous recipes, first ensure that the oil you’re using is an essential oil and not an oil infusion; there is a difference.  Essential oils are extracted using equipment that most homeowners don’t have on hand, and the extraction process is susceptible to explosions if it’s not carried out safely and with know-how.  Infusions, on the other hand, can be done by the average Joe, but they don’t have the same quality or concentration that essential oil will give.

Because everyone has individual tastes in the scents they love, I’ll list some of my favorite recipes that are flexible enough to accommodate a variety of oils, depending on your choice.

Sugar Body Scrub

For a great body scrub, combine 2 cups of sugar with 1 cup of coconut oil, and add a few drops of essential oil.  Scoop the mixture into a glass jar for storage and keep it handy on a shower shelf.  This is a fabulous way to slog off dead skin and add some aromatherapy treatment to your morning routine.

Body Butter

Melt together 7 ounces of coconut oil, coconut butter, and shea butter.  Once blended, add 7 ounces of liquid coconut oil, jojoba oil, or almond oil, depending on your preference.  Cool in the fridge for about an hour, then whip this mixture with beaters for about 10 minutes, or until it becomes fluffy.  Add your favorite essential oils and store this beautiful butter in a glass jar.

All-Purpose Cleaner

Using a plastic spray bottle, blend ½ C of white vinegar with 2 tablespoons of baking soda.  Add a few drops of essential oil (lemon, tea tree, and wild orange are great options with antiseptic power) and shake.  Spray on surfaces, let sit a moment and wipe clean!

Laundry Soap Booster

Use scentless liquid laundry soap, and add 12 – 15 drops of essential oil, blending thoroughly.  Lavender, wild orange, and lemon are great options as they each fight grease, remove stains, and help reduce unwanted odor. Launder as you would normally.

Mirror Spray

An all-purpose cleaner is great for most of the house, but mirrors tend to streak if you attempt to use it on them.  Try this recipe for streak-free, sparkling mirrors.  Into a spray bottle, mix 3 Cups of water with ¼ C of vodka (hold on to your hats, ladies) or rubbing alcohol, ¼ C of white vinegar, and about 20 drops of either peppermint or spearmint essential oil.  Shake well and use on all mirrors or glass in your home, rubbing with a paper towel for a shiny finish.

Carpet Freshener with Essential Oils

In a large bowl, blend 1 Cup of baking soda with about 25 drops of lemon oil.  Spoon the mixture into a glass jar with a lid, and shake well.  You’ll need to let this sit for a day before sprinkling it onto your carpet.  Leave the mixture overnight and vacuum off in the morning!
